Spasm is quite a natural occurrence in the body and most of us have experienced the problem of spasm. Spasm of legs, hands and back muscle are quite common instances that happen. But some people at some point of time experience spasm like movement of particular muscles. These movements are generally known as tics and twitches which often affect the eyelids or the face. However, they can affect any other part of the body as well. Usually the, the problem if tic and twitches are harmless and temporary. But in some of the cases they may be caused by the problem of tic disorder.
Tic disorders are of two types, motor tics and vocal tics. The short lasting sudden movements are characterized as motor tics whereas the uttered sounds as known as vocal tics that occurs during what is otherwise normal behavior. A person with tic may blink repeatedly even if nothing is irritating his or her eyes. People who suffer from tics differently may suffer from either uncontrolled movements or noises. The problem if tics is very common in the children and it generally last for less than a year’s time.
Motor tics can be distinguished either in simple or complex form. The simple motor tics include eye movements like eye blinking, nose twitching, head jerking and shoulder shrugging. In the complex one, the person may reach out for something repeatedly or kick out with one leg and then another. Tics are generally classified not as involuntary movements but as unvoluntaray movements. The people with this disorder are able suppress the action for time being. However, this suppression can cause discomfort till the time the movement is not completed.
People with tics can uncontrollably raise their eyebrows, shrug their shoulders, flare up their nostrils, and clench their fists. Tics can also make you clear your throat repeatedly, click your tongue or make noises such as grunt or moan. There is no set pattern to diagnose the transient tic disorder or other kind of disorder. They are very difficult to analyze them as tics can be associated with some other problem as well. In case you are suffering from the problem of tics then the doctor will do a full medical evaluation by doing physical examination and checking your past medical history.
They might perform other types of tests like brain scans and blood tests. The transient tic disorder is often found in children. It is very necessary that the family members and the teachers do not call for attention on this problem otherwise it will make the child self conscious and can aggravate their symptoms. A combination therapy and medication can work in getting rid of this problem. Cognitive behavioral therapy is another way to treat the problem of transient tic disorder. During these sessions, the patients are able to learn to avoid the self destructive actions that can be caused by this kind of disorder. Symptoms of anxiety and depression should also be taken in consideration while treating this problem.
