We all have been there- waking up to a feeling of aching throat, itching ears and a throbbing pain in
the forehead. Yes it’s the arrival of the common cold. Even though it’s called the common cold or flu
in ordinary language, unfortunately it causes high levels of irritation in the one who is suffering from
it. Even though we try our best to maintain a strong immune system, anything from a change in
weather, traveling or even a hospital visit can make you catch cold. While it’s impossible to
completely get rid of cold, you may shorten its duration or reduce the intensity with which it strikes
Ways to get rid of a cold quickly
Yes seriously take rest. Don’t take the importance of sleep lightly. You are sick and your body is
doing all the hard work to fight the infection. Hence, you need rest. Take the day off from school or
work and rest. It will also prevent the increase in intensity of the cold developing into fever.Don’t
watch T.V., take naps instead.
Drink loads of water as it will help thinning of the mucus and will ease the congestion. Skip coffee,
and sodas as they will dehydrate your body. Stock on fluids instead to help replenish water and
throw out the germs. Drink ginger tea, green tea or hot plain water. It will lubricate your passages
and also help prevent headaches and weakness that happens due to dehydration.
Our grandparents and parents have always promoted this home remedy. Its not for nothing.
Gargling with salt water helps greatly in easing cold and sore throat. Salt and hot water helps in
loosening the mucus and reduce swelling. Gargle with hot water several times a day to ease cold
Turmeric, Milk and garlic
Boil a cup of milk with a teaspoon of turmeric and two cloves of garlic. Garlic is known for its anti-
bacterial properties and so is turmeric. Drink this before going to sleep and trust us when we say it
will definitely help easing the cold.
Have some Chicken soup
The good old chicken soup always helps in flu. Chicken soup reduces inflammation, aches and also
gives your body energy. In addition to this, it makes you feel better.
Take few OTC remedies
If nothing works, a few over the counter remedies may help. Lozenges for throat pain, Pain killer for
head ache and body ache, a cough syrup or Expectorant and a nasal drop to ease the stuffiness.
These remedies can help ease the cold and let you get rid of it quicker. But we can’t promise that it
will make the cold go away. If it persists and the intensity increases, it may be wise to visit a doctor.
However, you may see the effects usually if it’s just a common cold.
