The feeling of parenthood can’t be explained in words but it has to be experienced. Not everyone is gifted with a baby and there are exceptional who face the problem of infertility. It refers to an inability to conceive even after number of unprotected sex due to female conditions, disorder of sperms or other unidentified factors. The common factors that affects natural fertility are:
OVULATION DISORDER –The problem can either or no ovulation or improper ovulation cycles. Hormonal imbalance is the primary reason for this disorder. For ovulation to occur, pituitary gland, ovaries and follicles have to function properly. Poor diet is the main problem for hormonal imbalance.
POOR SPERM COUNT –This is caused by poor lifestyle, smoking, alcohol, stress, damaged reproductive organs, illness. For a healthy sperm, the number has to be 20 million per mL or more.
BLOCKS IN FALLOPIAN TUBES –This tube is the pathway through ovary and uterus. If there is any blockage in the tube, it does not allow egg formation to happen.
AGE – The age limitation for a female and male biologically to become a parent are 32 and 50, after which the fertility drops gradually.
ADDICTION TO DRUGS – Alcohol consumption, smoking causes infertility both in men and women. This may lead to miscarriage when a woman is pregnant.
For every problem, there are solutions and the solution here is the treatment based on the patient’s age, cause of infertility.
Assisted Reproductive Technology (ART) is a technique where In Vitro Fertilization (IVF) is performed by stimulating and retrieving multiple mature eggs from a woman and fertilizing them with a man’s sperm in a dish in a lab. After 3 to 5 days of fertilization, embryos are implanted in the uterus.
Donor eggs or sperms: When there is a severe problem with either of the parent, then eggs, sperms or embryos from a known or anonymous donor is used.
Intracytoplasmic sperm injection: When there is poor semen quality, a healthy sperm from a man is directly injected into the mature egg.
Apart from the above techniques, the other factors are:
Balanced lifestyle – such as regular exercise, proper healthy diet, frequency and timing of intercourse can improve fertility.
Medications – to increase man’s sperm count, sperm quality, testicular functions are available. Sometimes surgery is also performed to restore the fertility and to remove any blockages in fallopian tube.
